A really big canvas

I work in an archives, which varies between not-dirty-at-all and interior-of-a-vacuum-bag dirty in as much time as it takes to open that next box (it's that same box that tore your new sweater the first time you wore it). After some consultation with the coworkers, it was decided that lab coats would be the solution, so BAM:

You'll note that they do not make lab coats for curvy ladies (or at least the local university did not have such things). I believe this one is structured for a 6'4 beast of a gent with football shoulders. We take what we can get, amIright? Some things need to change, obviously: the comically long sleeves are not made for archival grunt work, and the thing is one giant, shapeless tube of white (with pockets, though!).

I decided to look at it as less of a shapeless blob, and more like a giant canvas. First, I shortened the sleeves (unfortuantely the shoulders are still way out of place. I'm not a genie) and added some lovely purple fabric for a splash of colour, which you can see in the terrifying picture on the right  ----->

And then it was time for the best part - the embroidery! Obviously I started with a nice, bright monogram.

A purple posy for my pocket:

My favourite bit has to be this kick-ass tattoo-style design I did on the arm:

I'm super pleased with how this turned out, in particular. Note the bits of silver thread in the blade!

It's still a shapeless blob, of course. But now it's a shapeless blob with CHARACTER. And of course there is tonnes more space to keep adding to it. I'm thinking a giant candy-coloured sugar-skull-style owl across the back...

I have a blog? Oh right...

Heeeeeeeeeeeeey Internet! Remember me? No? I don't blame you. Just check out that date on my last post, for frak's sakes - November 2011? Oh man do I have some 'splaining to do.

I could say that I've been busy. I could say it was THE BUSIEST, MOST AMAZING YEAR EVER and I had absolutely no time for crafting and writing and whatever. But that would be a lie, and of course you can't lie on the Internet. Or so I've been told.

Nope, I've been just straight up lazy. Lay-zay. Lazy up to and beyond the point of gross. Let's not discuss how much weight I've gained or how many hours I wasted on a certain video game. That's not for discussion here. This is not a Whiny Blog - this is a Show Off Sometimes-Okay Crafts or Mild Achievements Blog. You know what I'm talking about.

That's not to say I've done fully-completely-nothing (just medium-nothing). And things are improving. I'm pleased to say we've ditched a certain video game and cancelled our cable. As a direct result I'm sewing, embroidering and reading more than I have in a long time. And it feels good.

So! Enough with the chitty-chat. Here is a round up of my recent craft accomplishments (or near accomplishments, as they may be):

1. Baby Book
I made an adorable crazy quilt book for my friends' new baby - but of course I didn't take any pictures. Luckily (?) lots of my friends seem to be in the baby making business, so I'll just take a picture of the next one.

The coziest snake
 2. Draft Snake
Holy crap it got cold didn't it? How many more weeks do we have of this? My house is 75-80 years old, and over that time it's managed to get a little drafty. So the solution? This handy little fella! He's stuffed with plastic bags. One of the patterns I was looking at said to fill it with rice or beans but that sounds like a TERRIBLE idea for something that's going to be lying on the floor in front of a drafty door. Oh, btw I need to make another one, and it will totally have googly eyes.

Beer Barons

3. Chug-a-Lug
This isn't my project, but I am going to mention it anyway - G adopted a hobby and hopefully it will be tasty! He and his buddy have started their first batch of beer, an IPA from one of those kits. If this works out, they have 'ideas' of getting more experimental with it. Hooray?

 4. Scarf
While the above mentioned beer baby (their phrase, not mine) was being created, I busied myself with a quick sewing project. This infinity scarf. Crazy easy and pretty stylish, if you ask me!

Chair Bandito
Three different fabrics!

5.Embroidered Cushion
So remember the Kraken pillow I did awhile ago? Well, it was feeling a little lonely. So THIS which I am super pleased with, though I continue to be a failure at embroidering faces. It will get it's own post in the near future.

Note the boringness and the baggy sleeves, particularly

6. Lab Coat
My job involves digging through a lot of dirty things, so I just got a new lab coat. It's a big ugly shapeless blob. It doesn't really have to be. Here's the 'before' shot. I've already done a few things to spruce it up, but they deserve their own post(s). I'll get around to that.

So there you have it. Now let's get busy!
